Dougherty County, created in 1853, divided lands from Baker County. It is named for Judge Charles Dougherty of Athens, a popular advocate of states’ rights. The county seat, Albany, is thought to have been named for the New York State capital.
Dougherty County is a county located in the southwestern portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 94,565. The county seat and sole incorporated city is Albany.
