About Gilmer County
Gilmer County is a picturesque region located in the north-central part of Georgia, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Formed in 1832 from part of Cherokee County, it was named after George Rockingham Gilmer, a prominent Georgia congressman and governor. The county is widely recognized as the “Apple Capital of Georgia” and is known for its annual Georgia Apple Festival, held each October in the county seat of Ellijay.
